Antonyio Davis (Track & Field (Outdoor), Minnesota State University, Mankato) grew up in Columbia. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Antonyio Davis’s, in full.
The question
Tell us about the downtown or Main Street in your hometown — the town you grew up in, not your college town. What's there, what's changed? Name the places you'd point a visitor to, and tell us what's different from when you were growing up.
The answer, as recorded
Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Antonyio Davis’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.
Hello, my name is Antonio Davis. I grew up in Hopkins, South Carolina. Hopkins does not really have a big downtown like some cities do, but it's a part of what makes it feel like home. It's more of a quiet community where people see local stores, churches, schools, any places that people have known for years. If someone was visiting, I would point them towards some of the local food spots and places around the community where people usually gather. I also would tell them that Columbia is not far away, so we grew up close enough to the city and small town feeling. Compared to when I was younger, the area definitely has grown. There are more businesses, neighborhoods, and traffic around the Hopkins-Lower Richland area. Then I can remember growing up, some people have changed, but the community still has that familiar feeling where people know each other, other families, and have been around for generations. That is probably the biggest thing I would want a visitor to understand. Hopkins may not have a huge main street, but the people and sense of community makes it such a memorable area.
