Community Voices: Arissa on the character of La Follette

If I met someone who had never been to my hometown, I would describe its character as unique and fun, and its reputation as southern and welcoming.

Arissa Baker (Cheerleading, University of the Cumberlands) grew up in La Follette. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Arissa Baker’s, in full.

The question

If someone had never been to your hometown, how would you describe its character and reputation? What makes it unique, memorable, or influential?

If I met someone who had never been to my hometown, I would describe its character as unique and fun, and its reputation as southern and welcoming. Being from a small town like La Follette, there definitely isn't much to do, which means you will find any way to have fun, and we definitely do, as long as it's southern. We love to go four-wheeling, hunting, and fishing. As long as you have a sweet tea in your hand, you're going to have fun, no matter where you are. Another thing we have is Morris Lake, right here in our backyard. It's one of the largest lakes, and it is so much fun. But it definitely means we get a lot of travelers here in the summer, which is also really fun, because you get to see so many new, smiling, happy faces all the time. I love it. What makes us super welcoming and southern is that we want everyone to see these beautiful Appalachian Mountains that we get to call home. If you come here, you are not going to meet a single person that don't want you here. No matter what, we're going to give you directions down to the local Mexican restaurant El Poblito's, and we might even tell you to stop by Saibon's Bar and Grill for some good chicken. That is one of the many reasons I love it here, and that's what I would tell somebody when trying to describe the uniqueness and reputation of my hometown.
