Matvei Chesakov (Swimming & Diving, Missouri State University) grew up in MO. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Matvei Chesakov’s, in full.
The question
Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?
The answer, as recorded
Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Matvei Chesakov’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.
Besides my parents, I had one person from high school who had a big impact on me, and it was my swim coach in Moscow. She challenged me more than anyone because she always expected more, even when I thought I had already done enough. She taught me that talent alone is never enough. Consistency and discipline matter more. There were many early mornings and difficult practices when I wanted to quit or slow down, but she always pushed me to keep going and trust the process. At the time, it wasn't always easy, but now I understand why. The biggest lesson I still carry with me today is that success comes from consistency, like showing up every day even when you don't feel like it. I still use that mindset as a swimmer at Missouri State University and in my everyday life.
