Community Voices: Vee on the time Chicago came together

Hello Nation fam, VR is here again. A story about a moment when my hometown came together. That would be around 2018. I think I was in fifth grade. We had a huge big block party.

Vee Edwards (Basketball, Harper College) grew up in Chicago. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Vee Edwards’s, in full.

What's up Hello Nation fam, VR is here again. A story about a moment when my hometown came together. That would be around 2018. I think I was in fifth grade. We had a huge big block party. I think we lost one of our, one of our members on the block. And we lost him. And then as a, as a, the, the whole 1200 block of Austin, we had a block club party. It was a memorial. We all came together and said, around here, we don't, we don't, we don't use any guns around here. Like this is on this block specifically. We don't, we don't do that. But we still, you know, it was a celebration of life. We still enjoy it. I still had a good time. And I was only a child. I think I was like 10 years old. And I, and I just remember that day so vividly. And like looking back on it, it makes me, makes me really proud. Because since, since that day in 2018, it's been like eight years. Never, never had a death on that block was on the gun violence. You know, a few, few older people died to old age, passed away to old age. But yeah, we came together. We put the guns down in our, in our little area in my hometown and Austin community. You know, we've been driving since then. Yeah.
