Community Voices: Will on the person who shaped them in Ruston

A teacher from high school who really inspired me and challenged me to become the man I am today was Miss Bell, my English teacher.

Will Estes (Track & Field (Outdoor), Louisiana Tech University) grew up in Ruston. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Will Estes’s, in full.

Will Estes for HelloNation.

The question

Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?

The answer, as recorded

Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Will Estes’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.

A teacher from high school who really inspired me and challenged me to become the man I am today was Miss Bell, my English teacher. She was always asking questions that did relate to the reading material, however, were more philosophical, such as, how does this character's life and how does their decisions mimic some of your decisions in your life? And she really taught me what it means to go out, what it means to adventure and explore and to strive for more, such as some of the characters in some of the books we read and some of their flaws and how that could be avoided. And that is a lesson that I carry with me into my life today. I can learn from the literature, I can learn from different people's mistakes and different people's shortfalls and learn not to do that myself. And I really appreciate her for showing me that. Thank you.
