Mason Nobles (Cross Country, Indiana State University) grew up in Valparaiso. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Mason Nobles’s, in full.
The question
Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?
The answer, as recorded
Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Mason Nobles’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.
A teacher or mentor from high school who challenged me the most or inspired me in a way that still shapes who I am today has got to be my high school coach, cross-country coach. His name, we called him AC. He was a great guy, very happy, very positive, energetic all the time. Great, great talker. You could talk to him forever about anything. He was always there for you though, and he showed me how to not only work hard, but how to put others first in a way. There was one specific moment in track where he had to make a very hard decision to take an individual to state or to try to make a relay team with that individual so that they could take more people to the state. That really opened my eyes to see how self-centered we can be sometimes and realize that other people are living this life too, and you also got to look out for them along the way.
