Layla Allen (Swimming & Diving, Tulane University) grew up in Mandeville. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Layla Allen’s, in full.
The question
Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?
The answer, as recorded
Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Layla Allen’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.
So my biggest mentor in high school was my club swim coach, Robbie Fritcher. And something that he would always tell me whenever I didn't get the result I wanted in a race or really just anything kind of went awry, is he would always say, you'll always have your time in the sun. And for the first two years he said that, I just kind of glossed over it and thought, I have no idea what he's talking about. You'll always have your time in the sun because I was starting to get a little impatient and I wanted to succeed now. And eventually, you know, I won a couple events at state and that's what he meant. Like my time in the sun was still coming. And so that still sticks with me because it has taught me how to be patient and how sometimes you have to wait for the good things and sometimes you have to wait for the best things. And it's really just taught me how valuable patience can be in your life.
