Community Voices: Joshua on the person who shaped them in Chicago

A teacher that mentored me from high school was Ms. McLean, my reading teacher, English teacher. So, she inspired me to come to school, come to college, right fresh out of high school.

Joshua Brooks (Football, Ohio State University) grew up in Chicago. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Joshua Brooks’s, in full.

The question

Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?

The answer, as recorded

Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Joshua Brooks’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.

A teacher that mentored me from high school was Ms. McLean, my reading teacher, English teacher. So, she inspired me to come to school, come to college, right fresh out of high school. And that's what I did because she was like, life's not going to be easy, and you just got to push yourself to get where you want to go. And that's what really inspired me to move today because without that, I probably wouldn't even be in college. I probably would have been working a 9-5, which is not bad. But, I'm going to school for football, and I'm majoring in sports management because of her. So, yeah.
