Community Voices: Talan on the person who shaped them in WA

A teacher I had in high school was my English teacher. Being from a small community, this teacher had moved down from the big city school to a little school.

Talan Yearour (Basketball, Park University Gilbert) grew up in WA. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Talan Yearour’s, in full.

The question

Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?

The answer, as recorded

Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Talan Yearour’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.

A teacher I had in high school was my English teacher. Being from a small community, this teacher had moved down from the big city school to a little school. The environment was vastly different, and we were doing an assignment one time, and my assignment was very well done. When I had other classmates try to peer review it, they said it was too much. My teacher at that time told me, don't dumbify my own work for others, and just hold myself accountable at a higher level. I hold that dearly to myself for anything I do now, because there's no reason to lower my standards or work for other people when I know what I can do.
