Community Voices: Brooklyn on why Houston is a good place to raise a family

What makes Houston a great place to raise a family isn't just the size of the city, it's the way our communities show up for each other.

Brooklyn Chavis (Soccer, Southeastern Louisiana University) grew up in Houston. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Brooklyn Chavis’s, in full.

The question

What makes your community a great place to raise a family?

What makes Houston a great place to raise a family isn't just the size of the city, it's the way our communities show up for each other. In neighborhoods across Houston, you see kids riding bikes safely after school, parents chatting at the park while little ones climb the same playground equipment their older siblings once did, and neighbors who still bring over casserole when someone's having a hard week. We have strong public and private schools that push kids to think big. Countless parks and green spaces like Herman Park, Buffalo Bayou, where families can spend an entire Saturday outside. And a cultural mix that means your children will grow up tasting the world, literally, through food, festivals, friendships. When something happens, whether it's a storm or a celebration, Houstonians pull together. That sense of belonging, of people looking out for one another's kids as if they were their own, is what makes this city feel like home. It's not perfect, but it's real, and it's why so many of us choose to raise our families right here.
