Community Voices: Ashley on the person who shaped them in Jessup

So a teacher that inspired me most in high school was my journalism teacher named Miss Rhodes in my freshman year of high school.

Ashley (Lacrosse, Coker University) grew up in Jessup. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Ashley’s, in full.

Ashley for HelloNation.

The question

Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?

The answer, as recorded

Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Ashley’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.

So a teacher that inspired me most in high school was my journalism teacher named Miss Rhodes in my freshman year of high school. I moved around a lot in high school so she was at the one school named Olentangy that I went to when I lived in Ohio, but she was so impactful because I remember I was very good at English and I remember that she was really hard on me and she was like you know your writing is good but it's just not like in the it's not like to a journalism standard and I was like okay so I'm gonna fix it to get to that journalism standard and the reason that that was so impactful for me is like I actually ended up going into communications which is kind of like journalism um because of her because she taught me that you know I would write about a lot of things that were really out there like you know people and their experiences with the paranormal and she was like well why do you think it's an important story and I was like well I think it's important because it's somebody's like experience it's somebody's true experience that they want to tell and that they want to share with the world to influence other people and to get them to see a different side of things and she told me if I wrote like that in anything I did that I could always tell a story no matter what what it was no matter if it was a big story a little story that if I wrote like that that I had meaning behind what I was doing and that impacted me today because it literally is something that I am getting my degree in in college for and that I've continued to do because I love writing and I love being able to tell a story.
