Brooklyn Chavis (Soccer, Southeastern Louisiana University) grew up in Houston. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Brooklyn Chavis’s, in full.
The question
If someone had never been to your hometown, how would you describe its character and reputation? What makes it unique, memorable, or influential?
The answer, as recorded
Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Brooklyn Chavis’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.
If someone had never been to Houston, I'd tell them this. It's a city that doesn't try to impress you with polish. It earns your respect through grit. Our reputation is as the energy capital and home of NASA. But the real character shows up on a Tuesday afternoon in the Texas Medical Center where doctors from every corner of the world, side by side, work. Or on a Saturday in the East End when families from Mexico, Vietnam, and Nigeria fill the same grocery lines at Fiesta Mart on Navigation Boulevard. What makes Houston unique is that mix. Sprawling freeways, sudden thunderstorms, and people who will still stop to help change a tire on the shoulder of I-10. I felt that most clearly after Hurricane Harvey. Watching my neighbor, Ms. Patricia, organize food runs from her garage near the intersection of Bel Air and Hillcroft while water still sat in the streets. Growing up here taught me that real strength isn't loud. It's practical, diverse, and stubbornly hopeful. That mindset still shapes how I face hard things today.
