Community Voices: Domonique on how to describe Ellenwood to an outsider

If someone has never been to my hometown of Ellinwood, Georgia, I would describe it as a close-knit community where people generally look out for one another.

Domonique Davis II (Football, Central State University) grew up in Ellenwood. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Domonique Davis II’s, in full.

If someone had never been to your hometown, how would you describe its character and reputation? What makes it unique, memorable, or influential?

If someone has never been to my hometown of Ellinwood, Georgia, I would describe it as a close-knit community where people generally look out for one another. Even though it is just on the outside of Atlanta, Ellinwood has its own identity and a hometown pride. It is kind of a place where you run into what you know at the grocery store, football games, or community events. What makes Ellinwood unique and special to me is the strong support system it comes with. It has came with me in my career, in my life, and shaped me to be the Iron Man I am today. Growing up, I was surrounded by teachers, coaches, family members, and mentors who pushed me to be at my best. At City Grove High School, there was a culture of utterness that extended beyond the classroom and who I feel. Coaches like Coach Jim, Coach Pat, Coach Adams taught me discipline and accountability, while my teachers like Ms. King always made sure I was always focused on my goals. One memory that stands out as exciting in the community for me is during City Grove Championship runs, seeing all the school and multiple state championships rock the town together. On Friday nights, people packed the stands to support my Saints, and the pride everyone felt representing Ellinwood was impossible to miss. Ellinwood may not be as well known as Atlanta, but that is the part that makes it special. It is a community built by relationship, hard work, and resilience. The lessons I've learned there from my teachers, coaches, teammates, and neighbors continue to influence the person I am today. I think of Ellinwood, I think of a place that believed in me and helped me become who I am.
