Community Voices: Eatoniel on how to describe Plainfield to an outsider

If you've never been to Plainfield, I'd say it's a place that gives you a certain toughness. Growing up there, you're surrounded by people who want more for themselves and aren't afraid to work for it.

Eatoniel Brown (Track & Field (Outdoor), New Jersey Institute of Technology) grew up in Plainfield. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Eatoniel Brown’s, in full.

The question

If someone had never been to your hometown, how would you describe its character and reputation? What makes it unique, memorable, or influential?

The answer, as recorded

If you've never been to Plainfield, I'd say it's a place that gives you a certain toughness. Growing up there, you're surrounded by people who want more for themselves and aren't afraid to work for it. What makes Plainfield so unique is how competitive everybody is, especially when it comes to sports. You see kids around you chasing the same goal of making it somewhere and that pushes you to work harder because you don't want to be the one who gives up. You see adults around you who may have not succeeded in life, but they push you to be better than they were. But at the same time, there's a strong sense of community. When one person succeeds, the whole city feels it. That's what makes Plainfield so influential to me. It taught me to compete, stay resilient. I represent where I'm from no matter where I go.
