Gabriela Cortes (Tennis, University of Houston) grew up in Houston. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Gabriela Cortes’s, in full.
The question
If someone had never been to your hometown, how would you describe its character and reputation? What makes it unique, memorable, or influential?
The answer, as recorded
Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Gabriela Cortes’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.
I would describe Houston as a very diverse and welcoming city with people from different cultures and backgrounds living together. I think what makes Houston unique is that you can experience many different cultures in one city through food, festival, languages, and local communities. For example, you can find places with Mexican, Vietnamese, Indian, Nigerian, and many other cultural influences, and there are events and festivals throughout the year that celebrate these traditions. Houston is also known for its strong sports culture, large medical centers, and many job opportunities in areas like healthcare, engineering, business, and technology. Places like the Texas Medical Center and the city's universities make it an important place for education and innovation. I think what makes Houston memorable is that even though it's a large city, many people still create strong communities and make others feel very welcome.
