Kelly Martyanov (Soccer, Centenary University) grew up in Greenwich. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Kelly Martyanov’s, in full.
The question
Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?

I've had many teachers who have inspired me and shaped me to become a strong, independent leader who's very good academically, but my main teacher was Miss O'Connor, and she was my honors American Literature teacher and inspired me to be a great English reader as well as writer. And they gave us, she gave me a lot of homework, but in reality challenged me to become a really studious and arduous worker so I really enjoyed it. We read a lot of books like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Deaths of a Salesman, a lot of Shakespeare. And that being said, one of my AP teachers was Mr. Richard Lear, I believe his name was, and he challenged us with a lot of Shakespeare, but he didn't make the class too complicated. So it was really good and inspired me to read a lot and write a lot. I enjoyed writing essays for him, and he just was really chill and a really laid back person who also really cared about English and it made me like the class a lot. These teachers inspired me to work hard and just be a great person and really love English.
