Mady Cheney (Lacrosse, Radford University) grew up in Georgetown. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Mady Cheney’s, in full.
The question
If someone had never been to your hometown, how would you describe its character and reputation? What makes it unique, memorable, or influential?
The answer, as recorded

If someone had never been to Georgetown before, I would describe it as a place that feels grounded, welcoming, and genuinely connected. It's not really just a town that you pass through, it's a place where people recognize each other, support each other, and take pride in where they live. One of the things that makes Georgetown unique is the way everyday life feels so personal. I think about walking through the downtown square, grabbing coffee at Lampost, and running into people that I know from school, sports, or even just around town. It's normal to stop and have a conversation, ask how someone's doing, or hear people talk about their life updates and just how things are going in their actual life. It's the kind of constant connection that makes the town feel alive in a super meaningful way. There's also a strong sense of pride in showing up for each other. Friday night lights at the local football games, the stands are packed with families, teachers, neighbors, and people who aren't just there to watch but to genuinely support the athletes and their growth throughout sports. Even outside of sports, you see things like community service days, local events where people volunteer their time, and different fun activities at the park. That's what makes Georgetown memorable. It's a place that teaches you what it means to be a part of something bigger than yourself, and that lesson has stayed with me as I've grown into a Division I lacrosse player at Bradford University. No matter where I go, that sense of community and connection is something I always carry with me. I'm Maddie Chaney, signing off from Georgetown, Texas.
