Matthew McGroarty (Ice Hockey, Quinnipiac University) grew up in Westport. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Matthew McGroarty’s, in full.
The question
Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?
The answer, as recorded
Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Matthew McGroarty’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.
One of the greatest mentors I had in high school was my senior advisor, Mr. Burdett, a longtime teacher at Brunswick School. He constantly reminded his students that the most important thing in life isn't how successful you are, it's being known as a genuine and kind person. He had an incredible ability to captivate every room he walked into with the sense of humor and the countless stories he shared. More than anything, the lesson that has stayed with me since knowing him is the importance of treating everyone with kindness and always striving to be a good person.
