Michelle Weiss (Swimming & Diving, University of the Cumberlands) grew up in SD. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Michelle Weiss’s, in full.

The question

Tell us about the downtown or Main Street in your hometown — the town you grew up in, not your college town. What's there, what's changed? Name the places you'd point a visitor to, and tell us what's different from when you were growing up.

The answer, as recorded

Downtown Peer, South Dakota is one of the few places that has always felt familiar to me. Growing up there, downtown was a place where you could go walk around, stop at a local shop or restaurant, and you would always run into someone you knew. It is a small downtown, but it has a lot of character because it sits along the Missouri River and is very close to the South Dakota State Capitol. If I were showing someone around the town of Peer, I would start with the Capitol and then take them to downtown Main Street. I would point out some of the local shops and restaurants before taking them down toward the riverfront and Steamboat Park. The river and outdoors are such a big part of Peer, and I think visitors should experience that. Downtown has changed a lot since I was growing up. Some businesses have come and gone, while new ones have given people more reasons to spend time downtown. At the same time, it has kept the small-town feeling I remember. It may not be a huge downtown, but it feels like a reflection of the town of Peer itself—small, familiar, and community-oriented.
