Brittney Burak (Cross Country, Indiana State University) grew up in Algonquin. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Brittney Burak’s, in full.

The question

Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?

The answer, as recorded

My biggest mentor in high school that inspired me the most was my cross country coach. He was just a really good example of what a good coach and a good person should look like, and this was because he was doing a really good job of communicating with his athletes always, and just making sure that they felt both comfortable and confident with the training that he was giving them. And he also wanted to know his athletes a lot outside of running and get to know them as people too, and this is something really important that I take with me today because knowing people from all perspectives is just really important for healthy and good communication. And also something that I still take with me today is just the confidence that he gave me from all the training that we got to do and just from being able to kind of have somebody to communicate with that and everything. And he also really taught me what a good balance between being really serious about running is and also having fun with it and just kind of having the times for both.
