Community Voices: Abbie on the person who shaped them in Stillwater

Ms. Turner, hi. My student leadership teacher my senior year of high school was someone who still inspires me to this day.

Abbie Rivero (Wrestling, Murray State University) grew up in Stillwater. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Abbie Rivero’s, in full.

The question

Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?

The answer, as recorded

Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Abbie Rivero’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.

Ms. Turner, hi. My student leadership teacher my senior year of high school was someone who still inspires me to this day. What made her so inspiring was truly her kindness and the way she treated everyone with kindness no matter what she was going through herself. Even on her hard days, she still made us feel so seen and so cared about. I remember one day I was having a really difficult time and she reassured me that everyone has bad days and it is okay to not be okay sometimes. That conversation stuck with me because it made me feel understood and reminded me that I was not alone. The biggest lesson I learned from Ms. Turner was to always choose kindness, even when it's hard. She showed me how much a little kindness can affect someone's day and how important it is because there's not enough kindness in this world. I still carry that lesson with me and try to treat others with the same compassion and understanding she showed me.
