So a teacher from high school that challenged me the most was probably my journalism teacher in my freshman year of high school. Shout out to Mrs. Rhodes.

Ashley (Lacrosse, Coker University) grew up in Jessup. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Ashley’s, in full.

The question

Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?

The answer, as recorded

Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Ashley’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.

So a teacher from high school that challenged me the most was probably my journalism teacher in my freshman year of high school. Shout out to Mrs. Rhodes. She was really challenging because for us doing journalism, you have to write a certain way, and I wasn't ever used to writing that way. So she really pushed us to live up to the and write to the journalistic standard that was required. It shaped me today because she always would tell us that a lot of journalism was telling a story and having, you know, people care about a story and using their skills and writing to share that person's story or a group of people's stories out to, you know, a larger audience. And that's like carried into my life because when I started college, one of my majors is communications, which is like journalism because I want to be able to take people's stories and get it out there and share that information to a larger audience and help them communicate, you know, what their message or story is. So in high school, yes, it was a lot of work and it was a lot like it was not like stressful, but it was a different standard of writing than we were used to, and it challenged us a lot. But because I was challenged in that way, it's helped shaped what career path I've taken today.
