Eatoniel Brown (Track & Field (Outdoor), New Jersey Institute of Technology) grew up in Plainfield. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Eatoniel Brown’s, in full.
The question
Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?
The answer, as recorded
Transcript. What follows is a transcript of the video above, in Eatoniel Brown’s own words. It has not been rewritten, and no part of it was drafted for them.
One teacher or mentor that shaped who I am today is Mr. Lerner. He's my principal from my high school, Union County Vocational Technical Schools, and I attended UC Tech. One lesson that I carried throughout my life that I got from him was to keep pushing no matter what and smile through all of life. I went through lots of personal family grievings and lots of family situations, housing situations throughout high school, and I definitely learned to smile through that, even through the pain. And Mr. Lerner taught me, mentored me, and really helped me nurture that side of smiling through the pain and giving every day a hundred, no matter what. And for that, I'm forever grateful for Mr. Lerner.
