One of the most impactful teachers and mentors in my life was not just a teacher, he was actually my coach in high school. And his name was Jim Davidson.

Marcus Von (Soccer, Grand Canyon University) grew up in Broomfield. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Marcus Von’s, in full.

The question

Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?

The answer, as recorded

One of the most impactful teachers and mentors in my life was not just a teacher, he was actually my coach in high school. And his name was Jim Davidson. He's actually probably the greatest high school soccer coach in Colorado history. He's won the most championships, and he also taught English. He taught a couple different classes. But he taught me some lessons that I've taken with me throughout my entire life, especially grit. He's taught me that even though life is hard and you're going to face a lot of adversity in your life, you dig your feet in the ground and you keep going. You keep pushing through, and in the end, you're going to make it through. And when you work hard, when you keep building, and you keep building, taking it step by step, 1% better every day, day by day, then it's just going to keep adding up. And this is a lesson that he taught me that I'm going to bring with me throughout the rest of my life. That when you keep working and you keep taking it step by step, trying to get 1% better every day, whether it's in sports, or in school, or at your job, or with your family, or whatever it is in your life, when you take it step by step, day by day, and you dig your feet in the ground, and you say, I'm going to do this, and I'm going to do it to the best of my ability, then that's when you start making strides, and that's when success happens.
