Andie Rislov (Volleyball, Dakota State University) grew up in Florence. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Andie Rislov’s, in full.
The question
Tell us about a teacher or mentor from high school who challenged you the most or inspired you in a way that still shapes who you are today. Who are they, and what lesson from them do you carry into your life now?
The answer, as recorded

A teacher who really had a big impact on me in high school was Mrs. Lanky. She came to Florence High School during my sophomore year, so I didn't know her before she started teaching there, but she quickly became one of my favorite teachers and made a huge impact on our school. I took both fashion design and culinary classes with her, and honestly, those are probably two of the most important classes I took in high school. They were classes where I got to be creative, learn things I could actually use outside of school, and try things I probably wouldn't have experienced otherwise. What I remember most about Mrs. Lanky is how much she genuinely cared about her students. She brought so much energy into her classes and made learning feel fun instead of just being another requirement. She really showed me the value of being creative, trying new things, and finding something you genuinely enjoy. Even now, those lessons I carry with me, especially because I'm interested in business, design, social media, and creative work. She's easily one of the best teachers I've ever had, and I'm really grateful to have had her as a teacher.
