Community Voices: Kaitlyn on how to describe Edwardsville to an outsider

If someone had never been to my hometown, I would describe it as a place that feels like the perfect balance between a small town warmth and growing opportunity.

Kaitlyn Morningstar (Track & Field (Outdoor), University of Missouri) grew up in Edwardsville. HelloNation asks student athletes one question about the place that raised them and records the answer on camera. This is Kaitlyn Morningstar’s, in full.

The question

If someone had never been to your hometown, how would you describe its character and reputation? What makes it unique, memorable, or influential?

The answer, as recorded

If someone had never been to my hometown, I would describe it as a place that feels like the perfect balance between a small town warmth and growing opportunity. It is a tight-knit community vibe where people show up for each other, whether it's at local events, high school sports, or just supporting small businesses. But it's also close enough to St. Louis that you can access, that you can get access to a bigger city's energy and opportunities. Something that really makes it unique is how much pride people take into it. The downtown area is usually charming with local restaurants, coffee shops, which I go to a lot, and community space that gives its character instead of feeling generic. It also holds a university, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, which brings diversity and keeps the town feeling active and forward-moving.
